The FUEiNT written exam.

Twenty-nine questions on the things a developer here uses in the first month — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP and WordPress. One hour and fifteen minutes. Written answers in your own words, not multiple choice.

It is the second of five rounds in the trainee developer hiring process, and it is graded by the engineers you would work with.

The rules
  • The exam is twenty-nine questions with a time limit of one hour and fifteen minutes.
  • Once you begin, do not refresh the page or switch to another tab. If you do, the exam is submitted automatically and you cannot continue.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection and a distraction-free room before you start.
  • The paper submits itself when the time expires, even if you have not answered everything.
How it is marked

We are reading for how you think, not for textbook phrasing. A short answer that is correct and in your own words beats a long one you could not defend in the next round, and an honest “I have not used this” costs you far less than a bluff.

Several questions ask you to write code. Write it as you would in an editor — imperfect formatting is not what we are counting.

What the paper covers

Nothing here is a trick. It is the ground a trainee stands on in their first weeks, which is why it is worth revising properly rather than skimming.

HTMLValidation, semantics, block versus inline, iframes, meta tags, id versus class, and laying out a full page.
CSSHow stylesheets are included, selectors, the box model, centring, hover states, and reading a nested structure.
JavaScriptChanging the DOM, working through an array, reading a checkbox, and validating input.
jQueryThe $() function, selectors, looping over elements, and the methods you reach for most.
PHPSpotting syntax errors and warnings, mixing PHP with HTML, and the difference between $_POST, $_GET and $_REQUEST.
WordPressWhat it is, what sits in the root directory, and what functions.php is for — plus client-server communication.

How long is the FUEiNT written exam?

One hour and fifteen minutes for twenty-nine questions. The paper submits itself automatically when the time expires, with whatever you have answered so far.

What does the exam cover?

HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, client-server communication and WordPress. Several questions ask you to write code rather than describe it.

Where do I get an access token?

We send you one when you reach this round. The exam cannot be started without it, so there is nothing to do here until you have applied and cleared the telephonic screening.

What happens if I switch tabs or refresh?

The exam submits itself immediately and you cannot continue. Close everything else first, and make sure your connection is stable before you begin.

Do I need to answer every question?

No. Answer what you genuinely know. A short, correct answer in your own words is worth more here than a long one you cannot explain in the next round.
